Dragon Empires Dev Diary:
The Dragon Empires website is sporting a new DevDiary from an artist who is leaving the team to travel the world.
My name is Trevor Walsh and today is my last day on the Dragon Empires team as I’m off to travel the world. It's a tough job but somebody has to do it! I have been at Codemasters for two and a half years, before I joined the Dragon Empires development team I worked on the cut scenes for Pro Race Driver. But before I go I thought I would tell you which aspects of Dragon Empires I have worked on.
Included within are concept works for weapons.

Middle-Earth Online Update:
So we've been lax on Middle-Earth Online news through no fault of our own.

PotBS Dev Log From GDC:
Pirates of the Burning Sea released another DevLog, this one from the executive producer, Rusty. He reports directly from GDC last Friday reporting on all that was going on with the team, as well as his own goals for attending:
I should mention that I have a different set of goals for the conference than the other FLS folks attending GDC. Heidi, Joe, and Rick are out learning new programming techniques. Taylor is learning new ideas for game design and art. Me, I’m bizdev, short for business development. That means I’m the one who gets us new deals, third party relationships, developer support, and basically anything else that comes to us from the outside. I came to GDC with a number of meetings scheduled, and made quite a few more happen when I ran into friends or hit the Expo center.

AC Treasure Changes:
Turbine has announced they will be making changes to treasure within Asheron's Call:
The treasure system is perhaps one of the best gameplay systems in AC. It’s exciting, it’s flexible, it’s addictive, and it integrates well with other aspects of the game. But after four years and a lot of plastering, patching and mending, it was beginning to show its age. So recently we started on a multi-month project to reinvigorate the treasure system.

NCSoft announces that open beta begins this Sunday for Lineage 2 and with a plus!
NCsoft® Corporation, the world's leading developer and publisher of online computer games announces plans to begin open beta testing for its soon to be released online game, Lineage® II: The Chaotic Chronicle. The free open beta period will begin at 12:00 AM Pacific Standard Time on Sunday, March 28 and last approximately one month. The game is scheduled for commercial release on April 28.

UX:O Begins Beta One!
A small handful (hundred) of specially invited members of the MMO Community awoke today to a suprise in their e-mail boxes, as they recieved invitations to begin outside testing for Ultima X: Odyssey.
The program that I am putting together is focused on bringing together influential people, such as you, who want to play UXO, but can't stand to wait. This is a by invitation program only, and limited to a very small group of individuals. This is NOT a newsletter, there will be no canned content here. This program will present you with information in the raw, and ask for your critical feedback and opinions. If you are interested in this opportunity than please read on, otherwise please accept my apologies for this intrusion and discard this email.

The insider program that I am putting together is focused on evangelists of the MMOG genre (which we've identified you being one). Attached to this email is a short survey to match you against our criteria. Since this program aims to be very hands-on we have to limit the program. The focus of this program is two-fold: 1) Gather opinions from influential members of the MMOG community & 2) Spread the word about UXO.
Looks like the game will be ramping up, once they finish the move to Redwood.

No email for me by the way.

EDIT: I've confirmed with an EA Rep, that there were legit emails sent out to members of the MMO Community.

Insanity on the WoW Forums...
Interesting read from the newsgroups at comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.rpg concerning the World of Warcraft Community:
Subject: Insanity on the World of Warcraft forums...

I don't know how many people here may happen to read the official WoW forums: http://www.battle.net/forums/wow/board.aspx?ForumName=wow-general

There is something going on there that is so insane...so RIDICULOUS, I don't know where to even start. Basically, we have a ton of spoiled kids who are practically RIOTING over the fact the Blizzard gave a beta spot to a guy who was a longstanding forum member who was very helpful to the community.

Yes, I'm serious. But there is actually a TON more to it than that. This is a LONG message, but there is alot to tell you about.. And I wouldn't even be posting about it if it was just some little thing. I bring it up because it's out of control there, and I thought some people may find it interesting, or humorous, or maybe a sign of how rabid die hard Blizzard fans can be.

Farewell Waterthread.org
The dust has settled and the fallout from another LumTheMad Legacy site, in which the community is torn asunder has come to a close. Waterthread.org is now more, after the site merged with f13.net. Dreadflame Joins PotBS:
Those of you from the Shadowbane Community, may recall Thomas "Dreadflame" Sitch, who used to be part of the team at Wolfpack Studios. Well, he has a new home over at FLying Labs, working on Pirates of the Burning Sea. He introduces himself as "Grogbeard" in his first DevLog:
I've only just completed the move from Austin to Seattle, and will shortly be attempting to fill the gap in my life left by Tex-Mex and tornado chasing. The Cascades are beautiful, however, and I'm looking forward to catching up on my skiing and taking advantage of the many Bohemian aspects of the Seattle area.

The great privilege, of course, is joining the august company of the folks here at Flying Lab. I'll be lending my skills, (and probably falling off the wagon on my workaholic recovery program), to one of the finest teams and most impressive studios I've ever encountered. And of course, there are PIRATES!

Eve Online Offers EnB Refuge:
Joining NetDevil with their announcement last week offering refuge to players of "Earth and Beyond," which EA announced was shutting down, CCP is offering players a place to keep their community intave in Eve Online, with a special.
REYKJAVIK, ICELAND - CCP, in cooperation with IGN/GameSpy, is offering Earth and Beyond users an upgrade to EVE Online. This is a response to the high number of inquires and downloads CCP has received during the last 48 hours from Earth and Beyond users. These users have been forced to look elsewhere for an alternative Science Fiction Online Game after Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) announced it would close down Earth and Beyond at the end of summer.

"We were surprised by the strong reaction this announcement has made, and the number of downloads we have received", says Magnus Bergsson, Marketing Manager at CCP. "To meet this demand we have created a special upgrade program to make it easier for these users to explore EVE Online."

The upgrade program will include a no-obligation free trial of EVE Online and a walkthrough of the game by a member of the EVE volunteer group. The EVE volunteer will explain to the user the differences between the two games and ease the transition into EVE from Earth and Beyond. Sigil Games Tour:
Warcry goes behind the scenes at Sigil Games as they tour the studio with Brad and company, bringing Vangaurd: Saga of Heroes.
When Brad logged in, the first thing he did was show me around the immediate area. He duked it out with a couple skeletons, to show me what combat was like, and ran around a bit. But that wasn't what really amazed me. What I saw was something that far out shadows anything I have seen yet. The graphics for this world are not overly-realistic, but at the same time they are more beautiful than any of the games I have seen yet. EQ2, Final Fantasy Online, and WoW don't hold a candle to Vanguard graphically in my eyes. But again, this is something you will just have to see to really understand at all.

The new land is pristine and untamed and your survival will depend on your avatar's skills, attributes and gear. So get prepared.

Realms of Torment Melee Combat:
IGN has the latest peek up for Realms of Torment's Melee Combat System in this second part of their continued look at the game.
The second thing we designed our melee combat system around was the tactical fighting concept. We wanted players to carefully plan their next combat moves. Of course, this leads to somewhat slower and longer lasting one vs. one fights, and some part of the thrill that comes from high-speed swings may have been lost, but we gladly accepted that in exchange for the fact that these tactical fights allow you to prevail even against much stronger opponents who don't know how to use their fighting skills in the proper way.
Answers some of the questions about combat.

Dragon Empires Dev Diary:
Dragon Empires has a new Dev Diary up about "Quest Making." Questing is not just about camping a mob for the uber drop, it's so much more.
For example one of the simple quests we have created sees the player trying to collect tax off three old ladies in three different houses. The quest gives you many choices in how you complete it. One old lady tries to bribe you, another to blackmail you, and all of this is just within one town with a minimum of travelling.

Dransik Now Closed:
Jacob Hawley, CEO of TKO Software, Inc. announced on the Ashen Empires site, that Dransik is now officially gone.
During the past few years Dransik Classic has engaged your senses and enriched your fun on the internet. Dransik Classic's founders, led by Jason Ely and Doug Gessler, have worked very hard with us here at TKO Software to make the Dransik Classic game available, but with great difficulty we relay the following decision.

TKO Software, publishers of Dransik Classic, have decided to discontinue Dransik Classic, effective today. We came to this decision after much consideration and with great reluctance, as the Dransik Classic game is our original MMORPG. However, for the past couple of years, AsylumSoft has worked very hard to make the subscriber base grow and unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, it has not. We recognize that MMORPGs have changed over the years, and we know that there are other good games out there to play. We invite Dransik Classic users to Ashen Empires.

All of us at TKO Software greatly appreciate your support and participation in the Dransik Classic community. In addition, we are grateful for the kindness and enthusiasm that has been extended to all of us by so many of you. Jason Ely joins me along with the rest of the TKO team in wishing you well in your online adventures.
Ashen Empires is still free to Beta Test with a downloadable client.

Horizons State of the Game:
Steve Snow, the Producer for Horizons: Empire of Istaria has a new "State of the Game" address up on the main site. It's a pretty detailed page worth of info talking about current and future plans.
We have been drilling into the client and locating high impact issues within the code. We've managed to locate a few optimizations that have really increased client performance significantly, especially in combat situations.

One of these fixes adjusts the way floating numbers look. Players will start to see a better feedback loop on floating numbers and they will draw every time as opposed to occasionally getting backlogged.

It's important to note that we are not stopping there. We have set aside a large block of time, extending out to May, to correct a lot of the idiosyncrasies in some of the existing systems in the client.

Two systems that are currently being focused on are Combat and Community Building. As the next three months go by, players will start to see fixes and optimizations rolled out two these two systems on a technical side.

As if this wasn't enough, the Spy abilities also include "Tap Data Node." Some of you might recall reading about this in my previous article on non-combat game play options. Spies are the masters of Information gathering, and tapping Data Nodes is the single fastest way to acquire it.

Ultima X: Odyssey Team Leaves!
Jonathan "Calandryll" Hanna, Lead Designer for Ultima X: Odyssey has left the building, and employ of Origin. With the recent announcment that EA was shutting down the Austin Offices and relocating the teams to California, Calandryll has posted his farewell letter on Stratics:
Over the past five years I've written countless posts, but this one is by far the most difficult as it will be my last as a developer for UXO.

Today was my last day at Origin Systems. It's been a great ride filled with wonderful memories and unforgettable experiences, but all good things must come to an end. While the decision to close OSI certainly pains me, my reasons for deciding to stay in Austin are mostly of the personal kind and I leave happy to know that UXO's development will continue.

I know for the most part that I have written the majority of developer posts here, but I want you all to know that there is a great team of designers, programmers, artists, world builders, marketing professionals, and executives behind UXO. Without their tireless work I literally wouldn't have anything to post about. I've had the privilege to work alongside some of the most talented people in the industry and I hope wherever my travels take me next I get the chance to work with them again someday.

I don't really have much else to say, other than I'm sorry, and to say thank you. Thank you for all of your support over the years, both towards UO and UXO. Thank you for letting us into your lives and for believing in us. Thank you for taking the time to read our posts, designer diaries, and interviews. And most importantly, thank you for your participation on the boards, e-mails, and IRC chats helping us create and improve these games. I also want to say thank you to the website operators and moderators for all of their wonderful support for UXO. I consider myself truly blessed to have had the opportunity to share UXO's development with all of you.

I look forward to the time when I can share whatever I work on next. Until then, take care and thank you again.

-Jonathan "Calandryll" Hanna
Joining Calandryll in his departure from Origin's is, Senior Producer, Rick "Stellerx" Hall, and Amy "Morgaine" Sage. We wish them all well, in look forward to their next role where ever it may be.

UBI pwns Wolfpack Studios:
The Press Release:

Ubisoft, one of the world's largest videogame publishers, today announced the acquisition of Austin-based Wolfpack Studios, the developer of Shadowbane. The critically acclaimed massively multiplayer online (MMO) game for the PC and Mac platforms and its recently launched expansion pack, Shadowbane: The Rise of Chaos, are operated and supported by Ubisoft's online gaming division, ubi.com, which is among the top five gaming portals in the world.

"We are one of the few publishers to operate MMOs in the US, Europe and Asia," said Gilles Langourieux, Managing Director of Ubi.com. "The acquisition of Wolfpack takes our strategy in the MMO segment one step further as it strengthens our internal expertise and it will allow us to develop quality content under our own brands, which we feel is critical to succeed in the long run."

"Shadowbane was the first online game of its kind to combine immersive role-playing with deep strategic elements such as city management, army creation, siege warfare, and economic development," said Frank Lucero, Shadowbane's producer. "We're thrilled to have the opportunity to join Ubisoft's renowned studios and evolve Shadowbane's compelling gameplay into the future."

The Wolfpack team will continue to create ongoing content for Shadowbane: The Rise of Chaos from their Austin studio. Much of the game's critical acclaim is for having expanded the MMO category into uncharted territory.

Shadowbane is rated "T" for Teen by the ESRB and more information can be found on Shadowbane.com and on the official community site, The Chronicle of Strife: chronicle.ubi.com.
