We lost those pics when our camera bag was lifted. Anyways:

BETA-BETA-BETA-BETA-BETA
(Anyone remember where that came from?)

Second Life the virtual MMO coming from LindenLabs has entered into open beta as they welcome an emerging online society to a 3D shared reality of their own creation per their announcment yesterday:
Linden LabTM announced today that its private beta test of Second Life is now open to the general public. Second Life is a burgeoning new online society, shaped entirely by its residents. Participants can explore a constantly-changing 3D world, create anything they can imagine, connect with friends and acquaintances, and compete for fame and fortune. The public beta follows a successful limited beta test that has been in progress since November 2002. Beginning today, anyone who wants to become part of this exciting, emerging world can begin their "Second Life" by registering at www.secondlife.com.
In other news they also named Mitchell Kapor as Chairman of Board of Directors who was a founder of Lotus and Electronic Frontier Foundation to help guide development of the game.

It looks pretty interesting and an alternative to what we know if you have not checked out the features yet.

AC's Gathering of Colors:
"Colors. Colors. I'm a nightmare walking, psychopath talking..." Er, Sorry.

AC Warcry sends word that the latest event for Asheron's Call, "A Gathering of Colors", was propped without much of a hitch. Old forgotten quests received upgrades long awaited for. And sneaky stout-imbibing drunks showed their true colors as more powerful characters than ever imagined.

As the storyline continues, we see more of a start to the Time of Troubles that precedes the Time of Peace before the Great Cataclysm in AC2. With 100+ years to go, AC1 shows no signs of stopping. You can read the build notes and view the changes on WCoD's Patch Tree. (Thanks Warcry!)

Eve Online Preview:
Darkmoor Dragon of Four Below Zero has his preview up and running for Eve Online: The Second Genesis. He pulls off the gloves with this introduction:
For those who have been avidly following EVE from outside of the beta, be warned, I'm going to tell you how things are, I'm not going to tell you what the Fanboi's want it to be or the PR department are telling you it will be. As such this could be a rather long "Preview" so get comfortable now, while we go over the roller-coaster love and hate relationship that I, and many others, have experienced in EVE - The Second Genesis beta.
Check out his honest preview, if you dare.

Middle Earth Online News:
News is circulating around that Chris Taylor has been out and about on the Official Vivendi Boards for Middle Earth Online, which were captured over on Middle Earth Warcry where he addressed a few questions.

How will the advancement system work?
Have they reconsidered the idea of "evil" races in Middle Earth?

The fledging MEO Warcry site also uncovered a tidbit that there will be no 1st or 2nd Age in LOTR: Middle Earth Online that you can read about.

Biting the Hand Hiatus:
Jessica Mulligan the infamous ranter/writer for her thought provking articles in which she slams the industry on gaming, reknown author and now some big-wig at Turbine for both Asheron's Call 1 and 2 say's she won't be udpating for a few month's as she has nothing new to say on her Biting the Hand site. I thought there was a rule about ranting, and working for the man? Is she just a temp for AC?

Bah. Its not even worth mentioning at this point how she has been against PvP but is now promoting a KvK game. Anyone have a link that works to the "What's the Frequency Kenneth" article that appeard on SBVault a few years ago?

MOG Magazine #2 Coming:
Yes, this time it really is coming. Statement issued:
MASSIVE ONLINE GAMING #2 to Ship in May, This Time We Really Mean It?

After much delay, the long-awaited second issue of MASSIVE ONLINE GAMING (MOG) magazine is scheduled to arrive on retail shelves in mid-May.

The first issue of MOG appeared in October 2002, but the follow-up was delayed when the original publisher of the magazine went out of business, forcing the magazine's creators, Incan Monkey God Studios (IMGS, Inc.) of Austin, Texas, to go searching for a new publishing partner. Now with the clout of a major publisher supporting it, MOG is available either by subscription ($35.99 for 12 issues, domestic) or at your favorite game store.

MASSIVE ONLINE GAMING is a monthly, full-color, 144-page magazine with limited advertising. It covers massive-multiplayer, persistent world online games and the communities of players that support them, written by players for players.

The cover feature for MOG #2 is a 12-page exclusive look at Star Wars Galaxies. Other games featured in this issue include: Asheron's Call 1 & 2, Dark Age of Camelot, EverQuest, The Sims Online, Ultima Online, Anarchy Online, Earth and Beyond, World War II Online, Furcadia, Dransik, Warhammer Online, Astonia 3, Neocron and Phantasy Star Online. Subscription information and other details may be found at www.mogonline.com or by contacting David Ladyman, Editor-in-Chief (dladyman@incanmonkey.com).
Cool.

AC2 For Free!
So like what do you do when no one is buying your game, and you have no subscribers? Give it away! Well, it's not really Turbine that's doing it. Or is it? Any how, EBGames is running a special right now where you get a 30.00 rebate on a 29.99 copy of Asheron's Call 2 if you send them proof of purchase from one of the other MMO's out. Gamestop is running the same thing.

Eve Online, Rutro Shaggy!
Negative as Negative Can be. With the official removal of the NDA for Eve Online yesterday some folks beat me to the punch on slamming this soon to be released title from CCP and S&SI.

On Four Below Zero, Darkmoor Dragon (Yes, that guy!) reviews the press release, comparing notes on what they are telling us, as opposed to what they are actually giving us. I could literally see him frothing at the mouth as he wrote that up. It's all good.

HaemisH over on WaterThread give's a first look from what he encountered within beta. In sapce, no one can hear you scream right? I think he was screaming to himself over his short stay in the game. Sentiments that are being echoed throughout the MOG Community.

Planetside Golden!
The Station sent over an advertisement that Planetside will be in the store on May 19th, of note in the wording is that the game will be in "limited release nationwide." They hope you will pre-order now to secure your copy. Is this a gimmick? Create a mad rush to get copies sold, or they don't think it will sell well, so they are creating hype while limiting production?

Shadowbane Stuph:
Smackdowns commenceth as further information is released about that whole hacking thing. Turns out some players accused BoneDancer of the Rolling30's guild of hacking their accounts and city, so that they would not be crushed in an upcoming guild war. Six members of the city to be razed screamed fire and blame-shifted in a cover up sparking riots all across the player base when Ubi and Wolfpack were already having server problems. In the end, Wolfpack and Ubi have been working on the problems non-stop and have issued a credit to accounts in good standing for the down time. You can check it on the Chronicle site.

Drama is good.

Valkyrie on Aerynth Sanctum has released a Mapping Utility which can be downloaded. It rocks. Shows Mob Points, Locations, Cities, and let's you add in your own notes. Kinda of like the old UOMapper for those who know it.

SBVault has been standardized with the other IGN Vault sites with it's new look and format, Sachant also has Part Three up to her long in the waiting Houses of Thrones series.

Love for Euro's! Even though Swing! is gone right now for Shadowbane, some aspiring players from E.U. have discovered a way to play Shadowbane in N. America while using their Credit Cards and Home Billing Address. Check it out. (Thanks Darkmoor Dragon!)

Anarchy Online major content update!
Anarchy Online gets a major content update with the mission system revamped! The "Mission Update" is one of the largest content additions to Anarchy Online so far, both in terms of new gameplay, looks and technical improvements.
The main focus of the update has, as the name inclines, been our unique mission system. We have now revamped all missions areas in order to make it more fun, diverse and not the least a lot better looking.

The "camping is not so fun" attitude has always been central in the design of Anarchy Online, and the Mission Terminals, with their personalized content on demand, has been at the core of this. With more than 15 million missions completed so far, they are most definitively a vital part of the gameplay experience in AO.
This update further proves that AO continues to lead the way as a cutting edge MMORPG. No other online game has anything similar.

The "Mission Update" introduces new looks, better layout, improved view distance, mines, turrets, cameras, new loot system, better pathing due to larger rooms, and not the least a whole host of other changes.

Check out the full skinny dawg.

Dragon Empires Q&A:
Dragon Empires has a new chat up and running on RPG Vault, this one on the Shadow, one of the two new races we announced last week. Jonric pulls out a good question in the interview:
From the initial information and what you've just said, the Shadow race seems best suited to rogue-like characters. How accurate is this assessment, and how do they fit within the game's clan vs. clan context? And how viable will Shadows be for solo play?
Go check out the interview for the answer to that.

Warden Speaketh!
Warden speaks.
It's 2am CST, and here is a quick update for everyone still awake:

- A patch just went up on the login servers, and Game server numbers are climbing.. so while this issue certainly isn't behind us yet, we are making progress. We will continue to monitor this from our side and give you updates as we can.

- We're putting a designer and a server programmer on a 5am flight to Montreal (meaning 3 hours from now) to assist the operations team in any way possible to try and make sure this problem doesn't continue to plague us.

- While I'll have to sleep at some point, tomorrow I will continue my efforts to sit on the forums and give you guys up-to-the-minute information as it becomes available. I know I'm not always able to provide the answers you want, but at least you'll have someone listening to your questions and concerns and trying to provide answers.

- The rest of the development team (i.e. the ones not on a plane) will be on constant duty until this problem is resolved.

I understand the frustration that many of you are feeling, and we will continue do everything we can to resolve this situation and get you back into the game and having fun.

Please realize that we understand the gravity of this situation, and are doing everything we can to fix it.
Information goes a long way. This is why so many people are interested in the vision of Shadowbane. Trying to read posts on the boards though is an entirely different matter.

SWG Open Beta, Not So Open:
"Dude, u suck." Thats probably running through many of a Star Wars Galaxies fanboi's head right now, when the Community Relations Manager, Kevin "Q-3PO" Ohara announced on the message boards that open beta won't be as open as most MOG'ers expected.
Sorry, LucasArts has not yet announced the new "official" release date. I doubt it will come until sometime after we go to open Beta 3. When we refer to "open", we mean it is open because the NDA will be lifted, you will still have to receive an invite to join.
The new question is, "Where are the invites!"

Shadowbane Rumors False:
Lietgardis from Wolfpack Studio's spanks my ass and call's me Sally as she hit the discussion thread from our earlier report about the Shadowbane problems which recently occured as well as the rumor circulating around town that Ubi player accounts and servers were hacked.

You may not be able to read these posts since like, you need to be a registered account holder of Shadowbane, but if ya can, there is more info than these cliff notes provide.

First up is Ubiq giving an update about the server issues, most important of note he writes:
There have been rumors of hacked accounts and/or credit cards. These will, of course, merit a very thorough investigation. However, as of yet, I have seen absolutely no evidence that anyone has gained these as a result of improper access to any resources either at UbiSoft or Wolfpack. Players are reminded, as always, to treat their account password with absolute care, and to ensure that it does not fall into unscrupulous hands via 'social hacking'. NEVER give out your password.
Thus ending the Hacked Account thing.

Vosx from Ubi Soft adds further clarification's about the login servers NOT being hacked with The Truth.
The Login server was not hacked. That is not true at all. Our Lead CCR asked the two affected guilds to go change their passwords because obviously someone had at least two of them (and this was a smart suggestion).

[...]

We are investigating these two claims, and tracing all IP addresses that logged into those two accounts. We will find the individuals responsable.
Thanks Lietgardis for pointing those out to me.

Now I feel stoopid.

Helen of Troy:
So for the past two days I've been watching the made for TV mini-series Helen of Troy on the USA Network. I have to say, this was a damn good movie and Sienna Guillory is a damn hottie! She was the gal in that knock-off flick Time Machine which was one of those revisioning things not worthy of linkage, the gal who got whacked.

If you missed this flick, you need to catch an Encore presentation. Drool over Helen, it was a well written, produced and acted story. Tons of action! Check out that accent.

Shadowbane -sigh-
For most subscribers to Shadowbane (myself included), billing starts in a little more then a week.

Server Issues.
Log-in down for entire day.
Characters vanish.
Cities vanish.
Unfair practices for compensation.
CCR's Unavailable.
No information forthcoming.
Rumors abound.

By all accounts, until Ubi speaks regarding the issue, everyone is following with the supported arguments that Ubi was hacked yesterday. The silence is not welcome. Especially for a MMORPG. Vosx did update though to announce that there are new Dynamic Server Maps which give live updates from within the game world.

Discuss: That about sums up the first month?

AC May Teaser + Q&A:
May's teaser for Asheron's Call was just announced. "A Gathering of Colors" appears to bring the Lugians and Tumeroks into a truce against the Virind - furthering the beginning of the history of AC2.
About the room a host of Lugians and Tumeroks exchanged wary glances. Their leaders had debated for four hours. Each had highlighted the goals of their campaign, their alliance with the Virindi, and their contempt for those that claimed regency over them. Their words had been laced with vitriol and at points it seemed the two sides would engage in open conflict. Eventually, the tensions drew the meeting to a standstill that had now lasted a full two minutes. The Lugian and Tumerok banners were still in the windless hall. Then the silence was broken. "A union, then." Muldaveus' voice was as deep as his face was stoic. The Tumerok seated across the table offered his hand.
And hints of Asheron returning home...and Ulgrim! It looks to be a VERY content filled month.

You can read the entire teaser on CrossRoads of Dereth!

The developers over at AC took the weekend off, mostly. They answered a few questions about some quest dynamics. But the most interesting was a response from both Orion and now Executive Producer of both AC1 and AC2, Jessica Mulligan, about why having one executive producer for both is a good thing. You can read the full Q&A here. (Thanks Ohpelea!)

WCG (World Cyber Games), the biggest game event that attracts interest and participation from gamers all over the world and creates harmony of humankind through E-Sports, participates in the E3 show this year. At the 2003 E3 show, WCG Organizing Committee will announce the outline and schedule of WCG 2003 which will be held at Seoul, Korea from 12th of October to 18th of October.

And then there are the games which we have confirmed will be there, so it's shaping up to be a great show so far, and were looking forward to hitting it.

Things that make you go, "Hmmmm..."
This little tidbit was snuck into the upcoming announcement of the next Player Gathering for fans of Asheron's Call and Asheron's Call 2, where they printed that Jessica Mulligan is now the Executive Producer for both games in Turbines franchise. Which adds fuel to the fire that Asheron's Call may be headed towards a cancellation later in support of the Asheron's Call 2 game. With recent updates leading the storylines to become more interwined between the two specualtion mounts.

Congrats to Jessica Mulligan on the promotion!??

There is also a Free 15 Day Trial up for AC2 on FilePlanet. Read about the Player Gathering. (Thanks everyone who sent this in!)

Z-Opolis, The Girls MMO:
PersistentWorldZ set to be a leading Game Service Provider, through the introduction, continued expansion, and successful service, of massive unique persistent game worlds that capture the imagination of the whole family - Massively Multiplayer Online Community Games (MMOCGs) for the mass-market audience announces thier launch of Z-OPOLIS™ The First MMOG to Appeal to Teen Girls. From the press release:
The vibrant world of Z-Opolis with its family-friendly, ESRB E-Rated game play that replaces weapons, combat, and conflict with cool clothes, positive social interaction, and cooperation is the first MMOG designed with girl appeal. Couple this to free software, usage-based billing and family plan options, and casual, inexpensive play becomes a reality for the 4 million U.S. teen girls who spend five hours or more online per week.

...

Reaching potential girl players also requires new marketing channels. Women and girls, unless they are in the games industry, tend not to read game magazines or visit game websites (the majority of which cater more to the hard-core male gamer). So how would they hear about or be attracted to playing an MMOG?

With a campaign launch today through gurl.com, a recognized leading content provider for teen girls, and dELiA*s, whose dynamic brand of apparel, accessories and home furnishings has almost universal consumer recognition with teen girls, PersistentWorldZ will be inviting girls to come play Z-Opolis.
This sounds really good. The bad news, is my daughter and I are going to end up fighting for computer time as she tries to player this game, and I play the boi games.

As the Market Burns, More:
Stratics has released the details for their pay-for-view premium service they announced last month, in which readers can do away with banner ads since the collapse of the advertising market on the net. They plan to include Item Databases for several of the games they carry content for. No items included for the Ultima Online Community which recently moved there after the Offical boards were shut down.

The Press Release states that Vivendi Universal confirmed today that USA Interactive has filed a lawsuit arising out of the transaction between Vivendi Universal and USA Interactive that resulted in the formation of Vivendi Universal Entertainment LLLP on May 7, 2002. The company stated the following:
"Vivendi Universal is confident that USAi's position is without merit. This dispute has been ongoing, has been fully disclosed in numerous public filings and represents nothing new."

"Since Vivendi Universal Entertainment declined to make any tax distribution in respect of taxable income allocated to USA Interactive's preferred interests at the end of 2002, we were not surprised that they brought this lawsuit. As with the Liberty Media lawsuit filed two weeks ago, the USAi lawsuit was filed to gain leverage in the negotiations regarding our asset disposal program which has generated significant interest."

"This lawsuit will not interfere with our asset disposal program. Vivendi Universal continues to focus on returning to an investment grade credit profile during the first half of 2004 by continuing to reduce the company's leverage."
There is a disclaimer saying this press release contains "forward-looking statements" as that term is defined in the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995 at the bottom with additional information.

Dragon Empires Player Races:
Just as I was to submit the morning news round-up, I get the latest Dragon Empires update in which they reveal they are adding two new player races, the Shadow and Dragonblood explaining why:
In thinking about our world we decided the game would be more interesting and exciting the more options players had. We felt that while we liked our human characters and character options there just wasn't going to be enough to distinguish players from each other. Also, we wanted to strongly distinguish the types of characters people would play by the look of their character. For these reasons we decided to add our two new races. More races also give us more storytelling options and more chances for players to roleplay. We look forward to bringing you the myths and beliefs of our two new races.
As always, their Sage adds the story behind these new races.

AC and AC2 Stuph:
Thanks to Ophelea (who recently took part in our fansite interviews) from CrossRoads of Dereth, we get a ton of info about AC and AC2 (Congrats to her on taking over as site manager of AC2.Warcry)!

Brent Schmidt (aka Keth al-Sheth), has written a wonderful piece regarding some of the landmarks of Osteth. Interestingly enough, they seem to tie more and more of the lore of AC1 into AC2. Those of us who've played both games will never forget the destruction of the Shadowspire near Cragstone by Elysa Strathelar. But, who imagined that 300+ years later it would become a landmark? Check it.

This week, Orion and Alicia Brown have given us a look behind the "why" of the enormous creature rebalancing and spawn move of the previous two months. No slight undertaking, we learn that this process started in February and isn't due for completion until May. Check out the "Monster Rebalancing."

Once upon a time, in a Dereth not long ago there were the Advocate's and their brethren. Then, due to reasons both silly and not-so-silly, the program ended. Warcry is proud to announce that they're transferring their support expertise here, to WCoD!

Thanks to WarCry and Ophelea for the news!

(Side note, as she mentioned above, it is interesting that as more lore is released the two games are becoming closer together, could they be slowly building up to the ultimate destruction of the lands of Dereth and the closing of AC1? Something to wonder.)

Unsure if this will affect PKer.org as they refuse to have any dealings what-so-ever with UbiSoft. Even indirectly related!

IGN Buys Voodoo Extreme:
Hot off the press from the Aquistions and Mergers Department on Business Wire, IGN has purchased venerable gaming site Voodoo Extreme merging it into the IGN Network. From the Press Release:
April 15, 2003--IGN Entertainment (Nasdaq:IGNX) -- home to IGN.com, the web's largest information and entertainment destination for video gamers -- today announced that it has acquired VE3D, a preeminent online site for up-to-the minute gaming news.

IGN's acquisition of the VE3D web site from BA Ventures, LLC, enhances IGN's reach among hardcore fans of PC games. VE3D is particularly known for its in-depth coverage of action and strategy PC games, which complements the in-depth coverage of massively multiplayer online role-playing PC games (MMORPGs) provided by IGN's Vault Network.
I guess this would be a Luck according to Pud, but a Fuck for the readers of VE3D.

Congrats to the Voodoo Extreme folks, hope they get a windfall! Last week IGN acquired AC2HQ one of the premier Asheron's Call 2 site, the sad thing about this is that all content on sites now become the property of IGN, and will lose what they once had making them unique.

AC2 Promoting KvK:
Jessica Mulligan has never been one to promote player versus player combat. But, now as the Executive Producer for Asheron's Call 2, it appears that her stance is changing. Turbine has released their "Vision Update" for their sinking ship, and within the new vision they are refocusing some items on the Kingdom vs. Kingdom aspect of PvP. It looks very similar to Realm vs. Realm and Guild vs. Guild of other games out now. As Matthew "Stucco" Ford explains:
KvK means players of different Kingdoms competing against each other, each group seeking to advance his or her Kingdom and slow or reverse the advance of other Kingdoms.
Before I got bored reading, Jessica further explained that, "The emphasis will be on group play, not solo play." regarding mobs.

I may of read something about classes 'not being balanced' for KvK as well. Will it matter?

AC Letter to the Players:
The latest Letter to the Players has been posted and, as always, gives some detail on what to expect with the upcoming event. Of special note, it looks like we'll see the return of the Tumerok Banner Quest--with some improvements. Unfortunately, it fails to tell us just what kind of improvements. As usual, I guess we'll just have to wait and see...
Greetings one and all, and welcome to April's edition of the Asheron's Call Letter to the Players. The AC Live team was hoping that spring would be here by the time of this writing, but alas, there is still snow on the ground. This month's Letter may look a little thin; there aren't too many items we want to discuss, and the majority of the April update involves new content and quests that we'd like you to discover for yourselves. But there are a few issues that bear mentioning.

Beta Alert: Face of Mankind
Duplex Systems (DPS) is now inviting applications for the beta test of their MMORPG, Face of Mankind. The application form is available online at www.faceofmankind.com.

Face of Mankind is the story of the human race 300 years from now. The action takes place in a futuristic universe, on Earth and on far reaching distant deep space colonies.

Playing as a member of one of 10 organisations, clans and corporations, your character will be placed at the heart of an epic player driven story line. Although for the beta test the 'full' story will not be unveiled, beta testers will be able to select an allegiance and develop their role playing styles. Duplex Systems have developed scenarios, especially for the Beta test, which will give Beta-testers a unique taste of things to come.

There will be 4 stages of beta testing with the first one starting by the end of November this year,
Environment and Interface testing
Game play and game dynamics testing
Exploit testing
Open Beta: stress testing the servers
Marko Dieckmann, CEO of Duplex Systems says,
"We are anticipating a very strong demand for places on the first stage of Beta testing. The initial places are available to everyone, experienced beta testers or otherwise. What we do ask is that beta testers actively contribute to the development of the game. DPS will not rush Face of Mankind to market, so this initial testing phase is vital to iron out any bugs and build balance into the game."
Launch of Face of Mankind is scheduled for Quarter 1 of 2004. DPS aim to go Gold only when the system displays stable and consistent performance.

DAoC: Silence is Broken...
Back on March 24th, Mythic announced they had received a $32 Million Dollar investment from TA Associates, a leading equity and buyout firm. One of the most notable changes was that a member from TA was appointed to Mythic's board. While all was quiet regarding that, it was rumored that the lowbies inside Mythic were walking on eggshells as their future was questionable.

Fast forward a week later to March 31st and another rumor surfaced from within Camp Mythic that a senior founding member from Dark Age of Camelot had left the building. The original rumor surfaced on Darkmoor Dragon's Four Below Zero site. The article was removed.

Well, someone finally broke the silence. The person who left, none other than Dave "Mahrin Skel" Rickey. He breaks the silence in his blog after taking the past two weeks to reflect, read, and play games citing his departure based on "creative differences."

He goes into a long discussion on the topic of gaming, designers and his feelings about the industry. While he was a very outspoken guy, I had nothing but respect for him. He knew how to treat the fans and had a passion for his belief in title's he worked with,

Dude, I've got a brewsky for ya.
Read his thoughts.

Update: It's been brought to our attention that the second rumor, regarding lowbies within the house walking on eggshells was unfounded and not true. Thanks for shooting that rumor down, our apology to all directly or indirectly involved.

AC2HQ sell's out to IGN:
One of the leading Asheron's Call 2 sites, AC2HQ hosted by GameSpy is being sold to IGN. Mithan the site's owner basically stated he is bored to tears with AC2, and looking to move onto other projects. By becoming part of IGN he has those oppurtunities available to him.
Im tired, im exhausted and maybe most importantly, im extremly bored and the fire that is in my gut, is looking for something new to burn through, and I see no challenge or reason to stay here in the AC2 Community anymore.

. . .

The Vault Network gives us that opportunity to move to other projects that interest us, so we can make a difference in those other, new MMRPG Communities in the future.
Right. I hope IGN gives him a pretty big wet kiss for buying the site, as it will never be "his" site again. (IGN will retain ownership of all content, forever.) We feel for the AC2 community that made AC2HQ home. (Thanks J.!)

Eve NDA Removal, NOT!
Over on Eve Gate is a copy of the recent developer chat hosted with the folks from Eve Online. Within it, Pann the Community Relations Manager say's that the NDA won't be dropped with an exact date.
We have been paying very close attention to the feedback we've gotten on the Gemini board and I've chatted with some of the testers in-game. One recurring theme we hear is that Eve's sharp learning curve is especially hard for new players. We've been trying to improve our tutorials to give people more information as soon as they log in. One of the tutorials is fine, but the other still needs some tweaking. Until we get that to meet our expectations, we won't drop the NDA. We *hope* that it will be fixed by the end of the week, but I'd rather stab myself in the head with a grapefruit spoon than mention an exact date. =\
Bolded for emphasis. This does not bode well, as we hear rumblings the beta really is of the style where after character creation there is not a whole lot to do.

They have plans to showcase the game next month at E3. We tried to make an appointment with their Press Relations Group to schedule time with them at E3, but they have not returned our inquiry.

Virus Alert Hoax:
This email is being passed around, again.
Subject: Virus Alert! Important
I had this virus on my computer like many other people. Please follow the steps to get rid of it. This is not a joke.

Laura

BlankA virus has been passed to me by a contact. I followed the direction below and eradicated the virus easily. The virus (called jdbgmgr.exe) is not detected by Norton or McAfee anti-virus systems. The virus sits quietly for 14 days before damaging the system. It is sent automatically by messenger and by the address book whether or not you sent emails to your contacts. Here is how you check for the virus and get rid of it.

1. Go to start, find or search option.
2. In the file/folders option, type the name: jdbgmgr.exe
3. Be sure to search your C: drive and all the subfolders and any other drives you may have.
4. Click "find now"
5. The virus has a teddy bear icon with the name jdbgmgr.exe. DO NOT OPEN IT!
6. Go to edit (on the menu bar), choose "select all" to highlight the file without opening it.
7. Now go to the file (on the menu bar) and select delete. It will then go to the recycle bin.

IF YOU FIND THIS VIRUS,YOU MUST CONTACT ALL THE PEOPLE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK SO THEY CAN ERADICATE IT IN THEIR OWN ADDRESS BOOKS.
Ok folks, before you go and start deleting stuff from you files, it's fake. A hoax. I know a couple of phreak's who went and started deleting their .exe files before looking into it. A little research goes a long way. As Kalvaer pointed out, "Whats even funnier is that this email was orginally sent last year and if ya look at the nortan web page it was first picked up on the 12 of april 2002."

AC's New Lifestones:
This Asheron's Call update courtesy Ophelea from WCoD:

One of the unexpected and most pleasant developments of this month's event, A Perfect Paradox, has been the development of new Lifestones. Not new Lifestone locations, but new designs. (For you non-AC players, a Lifestone is where you recover to each time you die). The sometimes hailed hero and other times villain, Nuhmudira, had been doing research into them for some time, but the results were both beautiful and unexpected. Alicia Brown has worked with the artist, Greg Breault, to give us "New Lifestones, Courtesy of Nuhmudira" - a unique and lovely look at the art development inside of Asheron's Call.

Thanks Ophelea!

Pirates Art Work:
Pirates of the Burning Sea is one of those MMOG's that is on the top lists as a most anticipated game. But, there has been very little seen of it, in the way of released Screenshot's or other artwork. Rusty from Flyling Labs explains why this is the case in his Developler Journal to 'da fans.'

Shadowbane Updates:
The Chronicle of Strife has some updates for Shadowbane. First up is the ingame event "Trial by Fire" in which no one is safe in the desert lands as Orc's rise up to war.

Also updated is the Profession Listings which now has the current information regarding available races and disciplines per class. This also includes the four base classes.

In the Heralds section another n00b guide is up, this one by Waylander covering "Chat Management."

Shadowbane.Warcry is a lesser place with J. The Damned Vulpine not updating there any longer. It's but an empty shell of a news site.

SW Galaxies Update:
Over in the other galaxy far, far, away. Star Wars: Galaxies has a couple of updates running. The first is a 2 and a half minute movie that is over on IGN (required you sign up for a free trail of the Insider. Bleh.) which is directed by none other than Community Manager Kevin "Q-3P0" O'Hara. It will be available for free later this week.

The second update on the Official site is that Q has a Query in which he ponder's what your thoughts are on the rate of item decay. Stop over and voice your opinion.

Dragon Empires Stuph:
Two new Q&A's with the Dragon Empires team. The first found on DE fansite Talrias.net talks about the role and enjoyment Peter "Calistas" Tyson has within his job as Community Relations Manager. The second found on JustRPG continues an already started interview recapping items from the past couple of months.

The official newsletter announced a new tale from resident sage Gadsolme who brings us a tale from his dealings with a primitive tribe from the West of Fortitude.
During a period of stay with them I learnt many of their beliefs about the nature of the land, its creation and those things that they feel spiritually significant to their lives. The following myth is one commonly told among the collective of tribes...

Pendragon Online:
Looks like Dark Age of Camelot may have some competition depending on how this new game announced last week develops. Green Knight Publishing the makers of the venerable Pendragon paper series are coming into the MMO scene with Pendragon Online.
Green Knight Publishing™, producer of the traditional dice-and-paper King Arthur Pendragon™ roleplaying game and Pendragon Fiction™ series, has begun development on the Pendragon Online™ game. This new Internet-based roleplaying game, developed using the StoryBuilder Toolkit created by Skotos Tech, will allow for a rich, immersive storytelling-based roleplaying experience.
I grew up with this game as a paper game. They used to have these wicked diorama's at GenCon depicting joust's.

This game could really rock if done right.

What is Battles of Tenadia?

Battles of Tenadia is a browser-based Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplay Game (MMORPG) set in a medieval fantasy world. The game has been in development for 17 months, finished its beta phase in february 2003 and is now in final stage. UO Ramblings:
Ultima Online sent out some news flashes. They encountered a problem (who woulda thought) Friday with the planned publish to AOL Legends.
Fertbert posted an Age of Shadows Ramblings about all that has transpired in the year since his last update.
Well, I've been working here at Origin for about a year now, and a lot has happened since my last comments from the team. We've shipped Publish 16 and 17, Event 5, Age of Shadows, dozens of emergency patches, and we're working on Publish 18 now. Along the way, we've handled network problems, hardware failures, several colocation facility moves, the occasional typo, a few malicious attacks, scores of bugs, ill-timed power outages, and even ice storms.
I guess that means another year before an update from him?

They also fixed a bug for stat enhancing items which were causing the effects to stay on, and an update to bless deeds in which they are implementing a fix that will refund Personal Bless Deeds which were applied to the stat enhancing items.

ATITD Review on WarCry:
A Tale in the Desert was reviewed in-depth by dugfromthearth over on Warcry.com As he writes:
Describing A Tale in the Desert (ATITD) as a crafting game is like describing it as a game where you move your mouse and push keys on your keyboard - both are technically true and both miss the essence and the complexity of the game.

Asheron's Call Q&A:
Ophelea from AC.Warcry sends word that they have compiled the latest Q&A sessions with srand and Orion of the AC1 Live team. In Orion's he answers many questions about creature balance, changes coming next month and new hunting grounds.

srand meanwhile has given a plethora of answers to questions in which there isn't anything this doesn't cover - housing, graphics updates, quests - and what to kill when you're having a bad day.

AC2's Ken Troop Leaves:
Ken Troop producer for Asheron's Call 2 is leaving that wing of Turbine to work on other in house items, which have not been disclosed. Taking over for him as he departs will be Jessica Mulligan who hooked up last month officially with the AC2 team.

They have a huge discussion over on the boards where the original announcment was introduced. Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Sims Online Best MMOG of Year:
My jaw kind of dropped when I read this. But EA send's us an eMail announcing that Black and White 2 will be coming to the PC and that The Sims Online took the Interactive Achievement Awards Best MMOG of Year?

Asheron's Call Stuph:
Did You Quit AC2? Come On Back!
If you played Asheron's Call 2 for a while but cancelled your account, it's a good time to come back to Dereth: you can play again until April 13th without any charge or obligation. You don't even need to give your credit card information. All of your characters are still there, alive and well. For more information, check out this forum thread. AC is more popular than AC2 though!

The Annals of Dereth were also released. From the March Newsletter:

MARCH TEASER: A PERFECT PARADOX
Puppet slid the slab forward. A sound of steel grating on slate filled the cavity near the energy source. Moments passed, then the observer emerged, changed. As it floated toward Aerbax, a black energy coruscated through the eyes of the mask... [Linkage]

LETTER TO THE PLAYERS
"Over the past few months, we've been looking at every single creature in the game in terms of their relative difficulty vs. reward (in both XP and loot) and found that many were unbalanced for the game as it is today. To give you an understanding of what the issues were in examining this problem, we've written a brief Q&A..." [Linkage]

MARCH DEV NOTES
"Miscellaneous Improvements and Changes: The Fellowship panel, and the way in which the game manages the updating and display of fellowship information, has changed slightly. We believe these changes will make the Fellowship panel more useful and less likely to cause problems, but we will be monitoring feedback on the changes and possibly adjusting them if necessary." [Linkage]

HALL OF SHAME
The AC "Hall of Shame" has been updated often with the names of some particularly naughty avatars. [Linkage]

AC.WarCry has some added info which is not behind the times.

When is Patch Day?
The AC1 Live team has taken it upon themselves to answer one of the most difficuly math equations in all of gaming, "When is the next Patch?". Asheron's Call has always been unique with it's LARGE monthly patches and though there has always been one every month, guessing which day it will fall on is like trying to calculate the stars in the sky by looking. Using March as an example, they've walked us through the schedule, freezes, updates and more freezes to show us exactly how this exact science of date-picking is done. You can read it here in When is the Monthly Update?

Programmer Extraordinaire Series
Turbine continued their in-depth interviews with AC1 Live Team engineer and game systems developer, srand. Today's article, Solo in an MMP, is particularly interesting as you'd not think the lead of a development team for an MMO would want to play alone.

MAD COWS
The cows of AC have all gone made and begun spitting acid and killing local citizens! It appears as if this day is once again causing odd things to happen in Dereth. When strolling through your local town, beware of the mad cows! Yes, it appears that Bessie is the latest culprit of the ever changing cycles and she is not too happy with the years of senseless slaughtering! [Images] Heh, MOO MOO! Thanks WarCry!

TechTV Boots:
TechTV the folks who interviewed us at E3 and never aired the coverage when we were having a huge discussion on the art of PvP and the future of game's moving into the PvP Combat market (It's a Niche Demographic, eh!) just "consolidated their workforce" letting some of their "On Air Personalities" go also. 20 employees gone.

No love lost. Gamers should watch G4TV instead.

MOG Magazine:
For those of you wondering where the hell this magazine is after the huge press announcment saying they were back, and better then before, using pre-order subscribers to show captial to get the magazine out the door. They died. Well, they issued a release to their subscribers, saying they are infact not dead and will becoming soon.

For those who signed up as a pre-pay subscriber they tell us that they have not charge you anything yet, and are infact changing the yearly subscription fee's to a lower rate.
Meanwhile, we're modifying our subscription plan. The issue-by-issue subscription that most of you have will still be available. However, we will also be offering yearly (and possibly bi-yearly) subscriptions at a significantly reduced price. We're still working out the details, but it will be under $40 a year for U.S. subscriptions.
With Prima gone, we wonder who they signed the retail partnership with?

Lum the Mad on Shadowbane:

Shadowbane Stuph:
Sachant is rocking over at SB Vault with maps of newbie areas Silverlance and Knightsbridge which are even greyscale printable.

Ubi has an update for playing Wizards on the Chronicle. These guides written by the player's for player's makes one wonder why you would bother to purchase the Brady Games Strategy Guide due out this week.

IGN has a new player guide up. It covers a pretty indepth list of primers for the game.

Valkyrie over at Aerynth Sanctum has a primer guide up and running for playing druids by Bran of the guild Aftermath. Decent read. Knowledge is power!

Amazon.com announced that the game hit their stores for $39.99. They say that they are giving access to the restricted races with orders. It also qualifies for "Super Saving Shipping" with some restrictions that may apply.

Ewle Ebonlore the Demon Queen of Ebonlore sends word that with the game commercial they have new recruitment requirements.
If you are still looking for guild now is the time to apply before the new guidelines go in effect!

Ebonlore has been around since 1997 in UO, EQ, and the SB Beta. We have always been a power house guild in the top 10% of every game we have played!

Battle Hard!

Star Wars Galaxies Beta 3:
Star Wars: Galaxies announced that they have officially started beta three and this Friday they will be including another five thousand testers. Highlights:
- We will be inviting 5000 new people by Friday (go easy on those F5 keys)
- The NDA is still in place. We’ll let you know when it has been lifted.
- We will be adding more people next week and the week after. We would like to ramp up to 50,000 by early May.
- The process is mostly random, but we will still hand pick people who we think would make good testers from these forums.
-We do not have an official release date yet, but will inform you as soon as we do. (We would like to get little bit into Beta 3 first so we can be confident of any date we give you).
What title to preview now?

UO House Design Contest:
Ultima Online in conjunction with several UO Fansites have been running a house design contest. Well, it's time to start judging based on player votes. As they say:
A couple weeks ago, we posted about a Custom House Design Contest that was being hosted by several UO fansites and gaming community sites. Many players submitted their house designs, each and every one representing how creative the UO community can be, and the hosting sites had to make the difficult decision of choosing who would go on to the next round. Now that those choices have been made, it's your turn to decide the fate of the remaining entries by voting for your favorite design on each of the participating sites! Only the top two that receive the most votes from each site will be able to go on to the final round and compete for the grand prize, so your votes are very important!
You can view the eligible entries and vote for your favorite design on any of the participating sites found here.

GR System Outage:
When it rain's it pours. So, my Vid card fan locked. Could not find anyone to replace 'just the fan.' Finally got a heat sink with fan. Replaced. Upgraded to XP. Had nothing but problems. Get it working and fully installed after wiping the drive three times. Can't get email to work. 2 day fight with Tech Reps. Site crash. Could nto update site, fix scripts or access mail on server.

Poll is up and running, links are fixed, and apologies for bounced emails, were getting caught up now, reason for late post. Will probably have some added updates over the weekend time permitting.

GameRifts Poll:
Ok, so I went and upgraded to WinXp based on what everyone said. It seems to be “the” system for gaming. It was a real pain in the ass to since I was using Win98SE with files built for Win95. After two days of phone service with Vash (Paybacks a bitch) I finally have it going. I still have some email issues to resolve.

So, I began looking for new anti-virus software and Norton sucked. It installed a Firewall that would not allow me access to any “Trusted” sites that were secure. So I’m using PC-cillin.

Our new poll asks, “What Anti-Virus Software Do Use?”
You can review the results of our last Poll in the Archives.

Shadowbane New Server:
A new server has been added for the Shadowbane community, due to the overwhelming response of fans whose outcries to Ubi and Wolfpack have been heard. The new server follows a special rule-set, to set it apart from the normal Shadowbane players taking full advantage of the capabilities Wolfpack can utilize in-house to add a new dimension to the player’s gaming experience. They are also expanding staff coverage for the new server with dedicated Heralds and CSR’s. Per Vosx:
We wanted to something special for our customers, as a token of appreciation for what they have endured. Players are morons and idiots who like to complain a lot. So, we’ve taken to heart what they have said and this is our gift to them.
The new server is ready and available from the log-in screen.

Look for the “Disgruntled” server.
Already several guilds have signed up, the leading guild is being played by Dwarves named “The Grudge Bearers.”

We asked Warden what type of special tools they have in place for this new server and he responded:
We plan on taking out all the stops. Some have questioned our vision about Shadowbane not being all we hyped it up to be. This new server is for a special breed of gamer, so we are going to constantly bring it down for hot-fixes, rollbacks, and periodic crashes for hours at a time. Not only that, this is the server we are going to be playing on, so we have given ourselves “god Mode” and will grief in the newb towns.
Vosx also added in regarding the dedicated staffers to the server:
I’m from the community, so we know how important it is to have people from the community interacting with the community when it comes to issues, and questions. We’ve brought onboard to Ubi’s team for this server Morthki as our lead CSR as well as Patron and J as our Heralds for the server. We know that their committmant to Shadowbane will help the enjoyment of all who participate on this server.
A Special thanks to all the folks in the Shadowbane Community who introduced this idea.

(We had to toss in an April Fools joke in someplace!)

UO/AoS Fixes Published (Again):
After the original problems that occurred last week with the patches applied to Great Lakes for Ultima Online, Great Lakes has received the patch to fix the patch with they reverted out after issues with he original patch. From the FYI Page:
As of this morning's maintenance, the fixes announced last week are once again active on the Great Lakes shard. This publish includes the following changes :
- Fixed a problem that was causing too much data to be sent to the user. This fix will greatly reduce lag for players on dial-up connections!
- The Harrower will now perform its drain attack.
- We’ve added a fix that should prevent players from experiencing the “blackholing” issue.
- Pre-AoS items that add to stats will no longer add those stats permanently to characters, but will lose their bonuses after the charges run out.
- Characters who die while in monster form will no longer be lootable.
- The Doom boss gauntlet should now re-set itself correctly.
- Houses that have been re-possessed by an in-game support rep (in the case of a player being taken to jail, for instance) will now be able to be transferred back to the player.
- Fixed another issue causing some teleporters and doors to become static and unusable (note that this fix is separate from another door fix published last month!)
- Locking down an overweight container will no longer cause “locked down!” barks to appear.
- The House Placement Tool no longer thinks it’s a spyglass.
- Fixed a crashing issue
Barring any unforeseen circumstances, we hope to publish these fixes to all remaining AoS-enabled shards beginning with the North American shards late Monday evening CST, to be active Tuesday morning, CST.
This time it really will work!

WarCry Network Outages:
The WarCry Network has been experiencing network outages with their moves, and may be temporarily down when trying to access the site. It was expected to be up and running within a few hours yesterday as one of their two servers were relocated. The second server overloaded with the stress.

Makes ya wonder if J left to go make his own site with the premonition that it would be CrossRoads all over again?

Update: I stand corrected. WarCry is up and running now without a hitch. They moved four servers at once, while using one to maintain the network. It could nto handle the stress so had periodic outages. J did not leave due to a fear of reliving the entire XGR crash. WarCry is safe from closing. Sorry WarCry, I bite my tounge.
