"Live the Legend!"
Set in the Kingdom of Albion in the years immediately following the death of King Arthur, players of the game enter a world in chaos, where Arthur’s peace has been shattered and dark forces threaten the Kingdom. Unlike traditional role-playing games in which a player’s greatest challenge is fighting computer-controlled monsters, players in Camelot will come face-to-face with their greatest challenge yet, other players. In Camelot, players must choose to be members of one of the three Realms that are striving for mastery in this chaotic world: The Britons, the Celts, or the Norse. The Britons are the former kingdom of Albion, once ruled by the great King Arthur. The Celts are from the wild and magical western island of Hibernia. The Norse are the large barbarians from the lands to the north of Albion.

There be Giants!
The first of the player versus player games built and released providing, Realm-based Player vs. Player combat with territorial acquisition and siege warfare, a dynamic Questing engine, an exciting combat with advanced combat Styles, animations, and effects and Intelligent Monster AI requires player strategy and tactics as well as an integrated advanced player crafting system that puts players squarely into the game's economy.

Taking a stance that other games failed, Camelot builds into it a system of protection from those who grief play by incorporating the rule-set that you may attack only members of opposite Realms. Also you cannot communicate with players of enemy realms – there will be no chatting allowed with enemies – this is done to heighten the “foreigness” of enemy players. In fact, the game makes enemy players seem as much like NPCs as possible.

Expansions:

Comments: One of the next generation of MMORPGs that came out after the big 3 (UO, EQ, AC). This game was touted as a PvP game with a twist. The main selling point of this game was Realm vs. Realm combat centered around relics.

Set in the world after the fall of King Arthur, Dark Age of Camelot pitted the defenders of Camelot called Albion versus the forces of Midguard taking on a Norwegian mythology and the forces of Hibernia taking on a Celtic mythology. Each realm had its own classes, lands, and quests.

Dark Age of Camelot was created and is maintained by Mythic Entertainment. Mythic has had a policy of being player friendly. Through the Camelot Herald, people can see how they match up against other players and how their realm is doing overall. Mythic has also hired a couple of figureheads from the player community to help in keeping in touch with the player base.

Dark Age of Camelot is by no means perfect. There are still many broken promises that have yet to be addressed such as housing or 'meaningful' rewards to RvR. There have been problems with balance in PvP and there have been problems with the ever-present bugs not being fixed long after first being reported. Lag, especially graphic lag, has been a large problem in any large player gatherings. The combat system is criticized as unintelligent and the long level times are reminiscent of Everquest. Even the fort and relic taking system is commonly criticized for its avoidance of player vs. player conflict, the selling point of the game.

Despite it's problems, Dark Age of Camelot is the frontrunner of the second generations of MMORPGs and continues to get better with bug fixes, new content, and implementation of old promises.
