Previews: Rubies of Eventide
Developer: Cyber Warrior Publisher: Cyber Warrior Genre: Fantasy Released: 07/26/97 Advancement System: Class/Skills Player vs. Player Combat: Yes, and Death Match Competitors: Meridian 59, The Realms, Ultima Online. "The Duke needs some heroes badly." The sea crashes on the shore near New Jollis, the capital of South Vormis. Duke Arkesita, Regent of the Praxic Empire, rules from his palace though his lands have fallen into disarray. Bandits strike at the caravans coming from Kaj Blood, to the west. Undead attacks have increased tenfold in the past year, Cultists lurk in the sewers and forests with nefarious plans, and the Bladesmen, once guardians of the poor, have turned into little more than petty thugs, extorting money for their protection. The Order of Wardens provides most of the safety of the citizens of South Vormis, as the Duke's men struggle to keep peace with the lands of North Vormis. Monsters roam the lands, making travel difficult for the average commoner. Many adventurers find that they can make their own fortunes in these difficult times.
There are seven civilized races in Vormis, although some are more civilized than others. Humans are the most common, but there are also Elves , Dwarves, Gnomes, Orcs, Ogres and the mysterious Leshy. Each race has it's own strengths and weaknesses, but any of them can choose any of the sixteen professions. Rubies Of Eventide offers a vast world to explore with emphasis on RPG gaming rather then just another hack and slash clone. With over 200 spells and close to 3000 items, as well as a calendar and justice system, Rubies Of Eventide offers RPG gamers what other games don't have. With over 90 character classes available from the start of character creation. Classes are not limited in what they can learn, but the cost for each skill varies by how naturally adept each race/class combination is. Thus, you can play an ogre necromancer, but your character will have to pay more for Necromancy (a magic skill) than a leshy necromancer would have to pay for the same skill. A leshy may be a fighter, but will have to pay more to learn some fighting skills than most other races, particularly ogres, orcs and dwarves as well as 8 schools of magic, each of which corresponds to a time of the day, color and which is directly opposed to one of the other schools of magic.
PvP is also a very viable option as well as being evil to not hamper a person's role-play enjoyment. PvP though no character may initiate combat with another below 6th level. At 6th level, you may choose to participate in several types of Player vs. Player combat (as they are implemented). The simplest type of PvP combat is dueling. You may challenge any other player to a duel. If they accept, the two characters may be able to choose to fight to unconsciousness, death or even permanent death in some areas, a second type of PvP is Guild warfare. If two guilds decide that they wish to conduct a war, all members of each guild are vulnerable to any of the opposite guild's members attacks. The third type of PvP allows you to choose for your character to be left unprotected by the Order of Wardens. Any character who has done the same may choose to attack you, or vice versa. You may change your protection with the Order of Wardens in most cities, however, if you have recently attacked anyone, you will have to wait until your character is considered clear of blame.
Currently in a "Pay to Play Beta" as the game is upgraded to a new graphics engine. Comments: One of the older games originally built for low end systems using Windows 95 they game has held it's little corner of the market with it's players. Not to be confused with a mainstream game someday it may run with the big guys. Orginally marketed as an alternative place to play where other games were not offering what players wanted by a gamer with a vision. Currently building upon what was already built the game is slowly being upgraded to a new graphics engine which makes it more visually appealing for those who want eyecandy. One of the PvP benefits for those who enjoy the strategy are the PvP Duels where permanent death can occur. The closest thing to the DM Chamber today. The drawback though is you never know who you are fighting, so unless they have been in the community for some time, do get killed by someone who may be exploiting a bug. Someplace to kill time in while you continue your quest for a game to call home, you may even find eye candy is not everything and this game is perfect for you. Discuss: |
