Bridge to adventure...
Choose one of four classes to begin adventuring from an Adventurer, Warrior, Wizard, and Thief. Choose your path of alignment from Good, Neutral or Evil and if you're a wizard choose from one of five schools of magic. One of the added benefits for players is that they also get homes. Your home is located in one of twelve towns in game. The system selects a hometown for each character you create

The magic system of The Realm Online includes spells in five different categories – Sorcery, Elementalism, Necromancy, Thaumaturgy, and Mysticism. Depending on your choice of character you may start with some spells, and you may purchase additional spells in the shops.

Shape how your toon is going look in game when others see your character by creating your own custom skins from the ActiveSkin Skin Builder provided by Softshape. Take an existing skin and tailor it to your liking, or create a unique skin and share it with other players. The possibilites are endless, allowing everyone to have a unique look, while also offering dyeable clothing in game as well.

A banshee in the dungeon...
December of 1999 marked the beginning of new life for The Realms as the original programmer Steve Nichols joined the Codemasters Team, continuing the world he had helped to create at Sierra Online, joining veteran game programmers, Bryan Waters and Doug Oldfield all whom were part of Sierra Online. In March of 2000 the long wait had finally ended where subscriptions for the Realm were finally reactivated after a steady growth in new players joining the game as integration and control came solely under Codemaster.

For those who enjoy PvP, be wary of the following rules. Excessive jumping (repeated attacking of the same person) falls under Harassment and can get you banned. While they support PvP and those who wish to play evil characters that go out on random killing spree's, if you stalk another player you can get banned. Be wary.

Expansions:
Codemasters continues to support The Realms with version upgrades.

Comments: The Realms, now the longest and oldest running MMOG on the net it's had a long history. Originally published by Sierra Online in '96 it went into a year of flux when Sierra decided to no longer support it. While the game continued to run, during a halt for a year, Codemasters picked it up to get into the MMOG market. Everyone needs to start someplace. If it's been said once, it needs to be said a thousand times. The Community will make or break a game. The community around The Realms has been one of the oldest and most loyal players to support a game still on the market.

Travelers buying supplies...
Not only does The Realm claim the title as being the oldest game alive today, they were also one of the first, if not the first game to offer players housing. Looking to get away from combat that has to deal with who has a faster connection then take a try at turn based combat one of the better systems for PvP. All combat takes place on a secondary screen with The Realms, where you enter into a combat situation of move, counter-move, move. While it can become tedious at times, it's the closest to thinking several steps ahead of an opponent today.

Worried about those who will jump into your fight and gank your kills. As turned based, those outside your fight will see a cartoonish dust cloud akin to Saturday morning cartoons to know there is a fight in progress. Once in, you have a couple of turns depending on the situation to know someone has entered your fight. Choose to end the fight before they enter (if you can), manipulate the spawn to your advantage, and/or prepare to kill the person who entered your fight.

Again, it's the community who makes the game. Today, The Realms community tires to make due in a game that has largely been ignored by Codemasters. As Codemasters works on new titles for the MMORPG market, updates have fallen if not to one person, then a greatly decreased team who has been slow to respond to the needs of the Community base. Another complaint has been the lack of an in game guild system. While harassment policies are in place for most situations, those who form and run guilds have been ignored as grief players create screen names related to well known guilds causing havoc with the reputations of better known guilds.

Never ignore the community.
Have fun, and tell us more about The Realms, as we are not all knowing.
