Special Sections: Gen Con '02

One of the best parts of heading out of town to a convention is the telling of all the misadventures that can occur. Boy, do we have some misadventures to share with you. What started out easy enough was that a bunch of us got a hotel room where we were all going to meet up and then we would hit "TheCon" as regulars know it.

Nothing is ever easy.

The beginning of our GenCon journal for '02.

Road Trip! - Div Devlin (08-10-02)

Usually, I'm never the one who makes the plans and have a gal I know take care of these things for me telling me where I had to go, when I had to be there and that I was running late as it was time for me to leave. This year, it did not work that way and somehow I was in charge of making the plans. Easy enough I figure, get a hold of Maestro and find out where it was we stayed last year; get the hotel and see who was going to go with us and leave when it was time.

I was so wrong.

Do you know these schmucks?
Maestro and I are confirmed to definitely go, as we have been going every year since we had cash in our pocket for a room during the convention. We get in touch with all our buds that normally would hang with us, as this is pretty much the guy's fishing trip weekend. Most of us are married now, live in different areas or are just not hanging with each other as much as we used to. This is our weekend to get drunk and play games! We are gamers after all. That didn't work out.

We look for other folks who may be interested in going as this year is going to be a mini E3 with gaming companies from the MMO market showing off their games to a traditional paper gaming market. With the evil mega-corp of Sony invading into the paper domain with their d20 rules of EverQuest almost everyone had to stop by to show their games.

Shadowbane announced they were going to come as well and have a booth setup for “Da Fans.” We talk to Rokin from Aerynth.com, our long time gaming bud Zalaster from SB Vault and J that Damned Vulpine from SB WarCry and decide to camp together!

Were on our way!

It seemed simple enough. Rokin was going to drive into Chicago meet us at a Shell Gas Station nearby; we would hook up and drive up to Milwaukee Airport where we would get J as he got off the plane, hit the hotel to unpack and then make our way over to the Con and register.

Nothing ever goes as planned.

Do you know where you are?
Somehow I messed up the plans and Rokin is in town twelve hours early sitting at 'a' Shell Gas Station. It wouldn't have been a big deal except we had no place to put him. I just tore my place apart over three days hunting for my credit card to pay for this trip. I hid my card that had no balance on it so I wouldn't use it. I hid it so good, I couldn't find it. It sucks when that happens. Maestro tore his place apart as he has been remodeling. His guest room is in shambles. On top of it all, Rokin is trying to get in touch with one of us as this is his first time in Chicago and he is lost. Not to mention that either Maestro or I were home.

Doh!

Now, above we said that Rokin was at 'a' Shell Gas Station. It was simple; meet us at the Shell Gas Station on the Northwest corner of 6300 s. Harlem. Call us from the pay phone and we will be there to pick you up in ten minutes or less. It's now getting dark out and about 8pm when both Maestro and I are tracked down. I'm on way to get him. Arrive at the Shell Station and he is nowhere to be found. Call's start going out and Maestro tells me he is at the wrong Shell Station. Rokin is at the Shell Station at 6300 NORTH Harlem. Which is an hour way.

Most memorable quote:
“How ironic that there is a Shell Station on the Northwest corner of both 6300 North Harlem and 6300 South Harlem.”
Three Shell Stations and two hours later Rokin, Maestro and I all hook up, we toss him into a hotel for the night (first class accommodations too!) and crash for the night. It's after 11pm now. We meet the next morning; grab grub and head out on the road to get J the Damned Vulpine.

Just for Rokin, the same Shell!
It's an uneventful trip other then having to pull off to the side of the road every hour so I can have a cigarette. Damn non-smokers. We get to the hotel early where Rokin almost has a heart attack, as directly across from the hotel is none other then a Shell Gas Station! We dump our bags and head off to get J from the Airport, without a care. We figure his plane is going to be late and we have thirty minutes to kill. When are flights ever on time?

This time the flight was early!

Were sitting at the airport looking for J's gate when we find it at the very end of the strip and there is a big blonde guy sitting there. Screaming out the back window of Rokin's car, I call out “Are you J!” It has been over a year since I saw him in person last. I jump out and run over, and it turns out that it's not J but C.W. Christofferson from Necromancer Games who just arrived. We start shooting the breeze talking about everything that has occurred in the paper gaming industry. I had no clue that Necromancer picked up the Judges Guild license. Way cool! To bad they are going to lose money on publishing it. His quote:
“It's all about the fans!”
Where have we heard that before!

J safe and sound in the hotel!
His ride shows up, Maestro has dropped Rokin off to eat and has been circling the airport as this really hot cop grrl keeps kicking us off the drop-off lanes. I take the walk down the strip and find J getting ready to board a shuttle bus to the hotel! I'm like “Dewd, were not there! Where have ya been, we been sitting at your gate waiting for you.” Turns out he arrived 30 minutes early and exited through an alternate gate.

Murphy's Law!
